Stephen King’s “The Stand”

Stephen King’s “The Stand” is playing all day long today on the SyFy Channel. This story has been one of my favorites since I was 17 years old; it was the first book that I ever pulled an all-nighter to read (and believe me, at over 1100 pages, it took all of that and then some to read it!). The story is so complex, and yet so simple at the same time – it’s the ultimate story of good vs. evil, of God vs. the Devil. It has characters who are rich and colorful, yet still flawed and realistic. Even without the supernatural element of the story, you will always find in your life a Mother Abigail or a Randall Flagg, a Nick Andros, Lloyd Henreid, or even a misguided Trashcan Man.

Usually television or movie adaptations don’t meet my expectations, especially with a story as extensive as “The Stand”, but the fact that the producers took the time to fully explore the story (by making the movie an 8 hour mini-series), it is – in my opinion – one of the truest book-to-movie adaptations I’ve ever had the chance to watch. If you’ve never read the book or watched the mini-series, consider this one of my recommendations. You will not be disappointed.

Photos from Deathly Hallows, the Epilogue

Again, I am avoiding all photos from the epilogue scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t share them with anyone else who wants to see them! :)

Here are some links to the Snitchseeker website, who has been posting these photos probably as fast as they are hitting the web!

The five Potters – http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/first-photos-adult-harry-ginny-potter-family-deathly-hallows-epilogue-73505/

The Malfoys – http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/first-photo-scorpius-malfoy-new-shots-adult-harry-ginny-draco-epilogue-73536/

And people, please keep in mind that the actors are in makeup and will be going through an editing process, which will include CGI. There’s been SO many people on the web complaining about the actors looking too old, makeup messed up, etc. That’s part of the anticipation, seeing what they will do with the aging. :)

Vampire Diaries repeats to air beginning tonight

For those of you who wished you’d gotten into Vampire Diaries this season, here’s your chance. Beginning tonight with the pilot episode, Vampire Diaries will be aired in repeats on the CW every Thursday night at 8m EST. The TV Fanatic gives a really good overall summary on the first season here.

Here is the original promo for the show, just to refresh your memory:

Deathly Hallows and the Fear of Being “Spoiled”

Photos from the epilogue scene of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” have begun making their way onto the internet. I saw a photo of Dan and Bonnie aged, and that photo hit me hard with such a sense of finality, that I made a decision to not look at the photos because I want to save something big for the big screen. I’ve been avoiding all of the Twitter posts and HP fan pages that have links (or actual photos) of the kids and adults, because honestly if I see Ron or Draco or any of the kids, I feel like I might cry and be sad that this is proof that the series is most definitely coming to an end.

I’ve done good with avoiding photos for two days.

I decided to go and check my LiveJournal page to see what my friends are up to, and halfway down the page I’m besieged by DH photos that aren’t under a cut.

shitshitshit

Not that I am blaming anyone who is posting photos or squeeing over how cute Hugo Weasley is (and dammit, he’s effin’ adorable!) But I saw that photo and immediately began tearing up, which is what I was trying to avoid in the first place. I’m so not ready for this saga to be over, and for me, those photos are the Jack Bauer countdown clock that I’ve been trying to avoid.

It’s not that I’m trying to avoid being “spoiled”. I finished reading Deathly Hallows approximately 13 hours after buying it (and that was with an hour nap in between pages). I know what happens to my favorite characters, and I know how the story ends. For me, it’s more of not wanting to be spoiled visually. I know some people who have avoided looking at photos of the WWoHP, simply because they want the full “ooh” factor the first time they gaze at the real-life Hogwarts. There are just some things I want to see for the first time on the screen (and in 3-D to boot…wow, sounded a bit like Hagrid there). I know that once I see a grown-up Ron, with his children, the fangirl in me will bawl in simultaneous joy and sadness. I think if I see too much now, it will lessen the impact of the film for me, and I truly don’t want that. I want the full, “I’m sitting in the front row of the Super Bowl at the 50-yard line” impact that this film is sure to bring for me – the same impact that finding these books has had in literally changing my life.

Sure, the fandom will never die – I get that. I know that after DHII is over and done with, shipping wars will still be debated, fanfiction (good and bad) will still be written, and I will still have the friends that have become closer than family to me that I found because of this series. But it was painful for me to know that the books had come to an end, and now there is proof that the movies are too, and I’m not ready.

Not by a long shot.

Photos of “Epilogue” scene from Deathly Hallows on the web

Today has brought some bittersweet news to all Harry Potter fans, for rumors of filming for the final scene of Deathly Hallows has been confirmed with the release of several photos across the internet. I have seen one actual photo, but have decided that I will not view the rest of the photos because I would like to experience those final moments at the theater. So, for the sake of my Potter sanity (and for a certain Fancy Fembot, who is currently reading “Order of the Phoenix” and whom I don’t want to spoil), I will just link you folks who want to peek to the photos here, here, and here over at the Snitchseeker website.

It was announced months ago that filming of the epilogue would close out filming of the franchise, so these photos are a sign that we are truly approaching the end of a magical era. In the words of my favorite Weasley, “can we panic now?”

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow is scheduled for release on November 19, 2010 (Part I) and July 15, 2011 (Part II).

Two new clips from “Eclipse”

Two new clips from the upcoming movie The Twilight Saga: Eclipse have made their way online. The first is the confrontation scene between Edward and Jacob that premiered on last week’s Twilight-focused Oprah Show.

The second clip looks to be the beginning of the highly anticipated “heart-to-heart” between Rosalie and Bella, where Rose opens up about her past and conversion from human to vampire.

I am really looking forward to the scene with Rosalie, as that was one of my favorites in the book, and probably one of the best written in the series. What do you think?

“Wizarding World of Harry Potter” news, photos and videos (UPDATED)

Apparently, the place I need to be in right now is Orlando, FL. Several stars of the hit Harry Potter franchise – Matthew Lewis, Emma Watson, James & Oliver Phelps, and Robbie Coltrane – are on a surprise sneak peek tour of the WWoHP today. This photo is from the fan site Snitchseeker, and shows the actors being playful at what appears to be the entrance to Hogsmeade.

Also, over on the Examiner website, you can find several videos from the park, including the following video of a helicopter tour of the park. (NOTE: The video appears to have been taken during the midst of construction).

OH. EMM. GEE.  Can you say EXCITED????

UPDATE: Additional photos and videos can be found at the Snitchseeker s, including a video of the cast touring/experiencing the park.

“Breaking Dawn” salary disputes settled; Cullen Family returns unbroken

With yesterday’s news that the salary disputes regarding Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene had been settled, Summit Entertainment announced that all of the actors who portray the Cullen family in “The Twilight Saga” movies will return for “Breaking Dawn”, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 18, 2011. This comes as a relief to a majority – if not all – Twihards, as we’ve already dealt with the re-casting of one fan favorite (Rachelle LeFevre was replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard for “Eclipse”).

Speaking of Eclipse, just a reminder that it will be in theaters on June 30, and that tickets are available for purchase at Fandango.

Vampire Diaries and Supernatural news: Fall schedules and minor spoilers

The CW announced their fall lineup this morning, and as expected by the fandom at large, Supernatural has been moved to Fridays, after Smallville. Vampire Diaries will remain in its Thursday night slot. This news, while expected, saddens me a bit, since I had a routine for my “Double Trouble Thursday nights”. But I guess I should just rejoice in the fact that my two favorite shows haven’t been cancelled, right?

With the press release, there were spoilers given for the new seasons of CW’s shows…since I am generally a spoilerphobe myself, I will not post the spoilers here, but will link you to the Ausiello Files page where I read them. They were not too spoilery, IMO, because fans have pretty much speculated on what the new seasons will bring. But exciting nonetheless

Is it premature to begin my countdown now?

True Blood Minisode #4 – Sam

The latest True Blood minisode has been released, and it features our favorite shape-shifting bartender. The clip starts of a slight bit morbid, but ends with one hilarious act. Watch now!

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner to appear at Twilight Convention

It is the con of all Twilight cons! Creation Entertainment has announced that the three main stars of The Twilight Saga movies – Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner – will appear at The Twilight Saga: Eclipse fan convention in Los Angeles, CA June 11-13, 2010. The trio will be available for a special Q&A session on Saturday the 12th; however, fans will most likely be disappointed at the following – it states on the website that they will not be available for autographs or photos ops.

Twilight fans will still get their money’s worth for the weekend, as the lineup is huge – one of the largest lineups I can ever remember seeing for a Twilight Con. The following guests are scheduled to appear:

All 3 days:

  • BooBoo Stewart (Seth Clearwater)

Friday only:

  • Justin Chon (Eric)
  • Tinsel Korey (Emily)
  • Michael Welch (Mike)
  • Kiowa Gordon (Embry)

Saturday only:

  • Gil Birmingham (Billy Black)
  • Tyson Houseman (Quil)
  • Daniel Cudmore (Felix)
  • Christian Serratos (Angela)

Sunday only:

  • Justine Wachsberger (Gianna)
  • Cameron Bright (Alec)
  • Christopher Heyerdahl (Marcus)

Additional information for this and other Twilight-related conventions can be found here at the Creation Entertainment website.

Formal programming for Infinitus announced

The Infinitus website has posted full summaries for the formal programming panels scheduled to be presented the weekend of July 15 – 18. The topics vary in range: there are topics relating to education (“Harry Potter and Virginia Tech: Studying the Phenomenon in the College Classroom” and “Teaching Harry, Exploring Difference” are a couple of examples), morality (“The Seven Deadly Horcruxes: Voldemort as a Mortal Sinner” and “The Better Man: the Morality of Youth in the Harry Potter Series”), arts and crafts (“Build a Potter” and “Magical Stitchery: Learning the Basic of Cross Stitch”) and other great panels.

I will be a first-time presenter at Infinitus, with the panel “Potterholics Non-Anonymous”; the summary can be found here on the website and also below:

Potterholics Non-Anonymous
Kat Amitrano and Hanako M. Ricks
The World of J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter are magical, wonderful things. The joy this series has brought – and continues to bring – is immeasurable. Happiness such as this should always be shared. At Potterholics Non-Anonymous, we admit we are addicted to all things Harry Potter and are powerless to fight it. However, instead of recovery, we invite you to share your enthusiasm with hundreds of others. This presentation will explore the pathway of creating a supportive local network of fellow individuals who share your enthusiasm for this literary sensation. We will explore ways of promoting a new group, step through a sample format for any party, provide discussion topics which will inspire intellectual debates and curious new insight, show how to “Potter-ize” popular games for the enjoyment of party goers, and how to do it all at an affordable cost for every attendee. Whether you are a member of an already established HP Fan Group or not, this lecture could offer you something you may never have considered before.

Kat Amitrano has been a member of the Atlanta Adult Harry Potter Fan Group for 3 and 1/2 years. Although not a founding member, she has hosted and co-hosted many parties. In her spare time, she and her co-presenter, Hanako M. Ricks, travel the thrift store/Goodwill mega circuit in the Metro Atlanta area in search of discarded Harry Potter memorabilia. Their finds have helped decorate many parties.

Hanako M. Ricks is a wife, mother of three, full-time student in pursuit of a Journalism degree, and sole blogger on her website confessions of a Grown-Up Fangirl. She became a member of Atlanta HP in 2007, after meeting members of the group at her very first Dragon*Con. She is also a contributor to the Sci-Fi Party Line website and occasional guest on the SFPL podcast.

Star Wars: Jedi Experience Summer Camp

Jedi wannabes young and old will have a chance this summer to immerse themselves in the world of Star Wars. Star Wars: Jedi Experience is a 3-day camp for all ages that “focuses on the principles and moral codes surrounding the training of a Jedi. It is an educational look into the scientific, technological, historical and cultural trappings of the Star Wars universe, with real world parallels.”

The overnight camp – which is held at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL –  is available in two packages: a parent/child (ages 7-12) weekend (Fri-Sun), or a child-only overnight camp (Mon-Wed). The fee is $450/person, and the camp runs June 25 – September 6. More details can be found on the website: http://www.spacecamp.com/landing/jedi/

Eclipse stars on Oprah (clips – UPDATED)

Thanks to http://www.eclipsemovieorg.com, there are clips available from today’s Oprah show starring the stars of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. These clips will most likely be removed quickly, so hurry up and watch, and I will update this post with permanent clips as they become available.

This clip is of a scene where Edward confronts Jacob after the kiss (Eclipse readers are well aware of what I’m talking about; I will not spoil it for non-book viewers).

And here are videos from the actual show, broken down into five parts:

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Part 4:

Part 5:

Oprah’s website also has some shorter videos of the show (the surprise visits, backstage Q&A, etc) at this link. If you click on the first video, the rest will automatically play in order.

Day full of Eclipse goodies

There’s a lot of activity going on today in the world of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. First off, as a HUGE Robert Pattinson fan (every since he portrayed Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), I wanted to wish him a very happy birthday!!

Next, a reminder that today’s Oprah Show will focus on the movie, with stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Dakota Fanning. The Oprah Show airs at 4:00pm EST.

Last, but definitely not least, a new clip from the movie has been released at the Apple Trailers website. The new clip features members of the Volturi witnessing Victoria’s newborn vampires cause destruction in the city, and they discuss the possible consequences of those actions.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is due in theaters June 30. Tickets will be available for advance purchase tomorrow on Fandango.

First three minisodes of HBO’s “True Blood” online

Okay guys, I know I’ve been slacking and I offer my deepest apologies!! Now that that’s out of the way, are you ready for some “True Blood” goodies? The first 3/6 minisodes of the popular series have been released, in anticipation of the June 13 premiere of Season 3.

The first features a bored Pam and irritated Eric, who are auditioning some (very horrible) dancers for Fangtasia. However, the auditions take an interesting turn towards the end.

The second video features our favorite newborn vamp, Jessica, as she searches for a little nighttime fun. I think the clip shows how Jessica has matured from the angry, defiant vamp she began as in her undead life.

The third clip features Sookie and Tara discussing dating, while Lafayette offers his two cents worth.

Enjoy all three, and I’ll have #4 for you next week once it’s been posted!

Book Thoughts: “Dead in the Family” (minor spoilers)

I don’t like writing reviews for the simple fact that I don’t like having to try to talk about a book/show/movie while trying to screen myself from giving out possible spoilers. But I do want to get a few of my thoughts out now; my opinions of books tend to change once some time has gone by, or I get a chance to re-read and alter my thoughts.

Hmm…what to say about Dead in the Family? As usual, I enjoyed re-immersing myself into the Southern Vampire world, but in this – the 10th book – I found myself torn between wanting more, and wanting something different.

Some of the good:

*More exploration of the Sookie/Eric relationship.

*More Claude.

*More action, more Weres

*Interesting new characters – Vampire-wise.

Some of the things I did not like:

* The fact that CHarris tends to over-explain some of the key points of the series over and over and over again. In Book #10, I don’t need to read Sookie’s explanation of how her power works…again. I’ve had to read that in all nine of the previous books.

* Too much political talk. I understand that the Were/Vampire legislation is a big deal in the series, but there was way too much political talk for my taste. Vampire politics, Were politics, human politics; I don’t even like talking about politics in real life, much less do I want to read about it in a fantasy world.

* Not enough Bill. I understand that there are a lot of fans who do not like Bill, but I am one of the ones who is sympathetic to his plight and the accumulating set of circumstances that have gotten him where he is, storyline-wise. I was sad to see him reduced to such a minor character in this book. But when he did show up, the scenes were very moving, very powerful for me.

*No Bubba.

All in all it was a great book, just as with the others. Entertaining with enough silliness in it to be fun without being cheesy. Now comes the long wait for Book #11.
