New Moon: A Few Thoughts

I took my daughters to see New Moon yesterday, so I got to see the movie for the second time. Surprisingly, I still loved it as much as I did the first time, and I can say the movie has renewed my interest in the series. I have heard a few really negative reviews from people I know, but here are the things that I loved about it.

Relationship between Edward and Bella – MUCH better played out in this one, in my opinion. I really felt like the relationship was quite rushed in Twilight and it in New Moon it just seemed more realistic. One other thing I realized: the parts of their interaction/dialogue where I previously thought it was so “corny” that I had to look away were actually not corny at all. I was reacting to the intensity of the E/B relationship. Have you ever seen people in love share an intimate moment, and you felt like you were intruding by simply looking? That’s how I feel when I see Robert and Kristen onscreen. In the movies or in real life, the chemistry between them is so intense and so undeniable, that I literally feel it in my bones when I look at them. I don’t know if anyone else does, but there it is.

Relationship between Jacob and Bella – Let me say that Taylor Lautner’s portrayal of Jake is the only thing that makes my heart break about this relationship. Jacob was not a favorite character of mine in the books, but I love movie!Jacob. Again, the writers did a great job of showing the building relationship between Jake and Bella; this budding relationship was more believable to me than the E/B buildup of Twilight. It seemed better paced and more realistic. We got to see Jacob fall in love with Bella and her developing feelings for him. The near-kiss was so inevitable that evenI was saying “kiss him already, dammit!” and I’m a hardcore EB shipper!

The Wolf Pack – just…awesome! I cant even say anything that would make that statement better. They were awesome.

The opening scene with Bella looking at her old self in the mirror was very well done. I was surprised to see it there, but I’m glad that they included it. Actually, this movie stayed pretty true to the book; there wasn’t much that they left out.

The Volturi – seemed as though the casting was well done, but aside from Aro and the ass-kicking Felix (yes, even I have to admit that Edward got handed his ass on a silver platter), there wasn’t enough dialogue from them. Caius was very…pretty, for lack of a better word. And I really wanted to see Dakota Fanning have a bit more dialogue. In my mind reading the books, Jane is like a mini-Umbridge, and I hate that there was not enough time to show that on screen. But overall the scene in Italy was great.

I’m sure that there’s a lot of other things I could gush about (let’s not get me started on the airtime that Jacob’s amazing abs received), but I think you get the picture; I loved the movie.

Harry Potter fanfiction: some old stuff

As if I didn’t already have enough to do, I’ve been seriously thinking of writing again. Aside from schoolwork, I haven’t done any creative writing in about two years, when I wrote 3 fanfic pieces for the HP fandom. They have been posted on a few fanfic sites, and I’ve gotten some really great reviews on them all, but I’m always looking for more feedback (or criticism, or ego-stroking, whatever you want to call it LOL). If you feel interested, visit my link here and let me know what you think. Please keep in mind that these were written 2 years ago, after a 20+ year absence from writing, and my first ever attempts at fanfiction.

Thursday night squee!! (Spoilers are included)

I don’t usually write reviews, because I can get tad bit long-winded when I begin discussing anything in fandom, but last night was a bit too awesome for me to skip over.

November 19 was a great day for me as a fangirl: Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and New Moon, all in the same night. I laughed, I cried, I lusted. :) Here’s a quick run-down, and SPOILERS are included so read at your own risk!!!

The Vampire Diaries – Overall, this was a great episode, for a lot of reasons. First off, I have a question: what is it about the Gilbert women that make them so desirable? The return of Logan this week puts a slight monkey-wrench in Jenna’s life, as she is clearly trying her best to move on. Luckily, Alaric is around to be her knight in shining armor. Still don’t know how I feel about his character; it’s clear that he has an ulterior motive for being in Mystic Falls; unfortunately we will have to wait until January (freaking January!) to find out what it is.

As much as I love Elena’s character (better in the show than in the book series), I must say that I’m getting a bit tired of the yo-yo act she’s pulling with Stefan. First, she finds out that Steffan is a vamp and says she can’t She “doesn’t” want to be with him, yet continues to call him. Then, she decides – when he tries to leave her – that she loves him and can’t be without him. They kiss and make up (and make love off camera), but upon finding a picture of Katherine (whom he told her in the first episode, that she greatly resembles), she leaves upset and in tears. I really need her to pick an emotion and stick with it, because it’s becoming a bit tiresome watching her go through her conflicting emotions.

Damon, Damon, Damon. As much as I want to hate this character, I simply can’t. I really feel like there’s more to Damon than just revenge and hate; his heartbreak last week over not freeing Katherine proves it. I’m just really interested in seeing where his story goes.

And Logan got what he deserved…

Supernatural - Oh my goodness…I can’t remember the last time an episode made me cry so much. While I am glad that the storyline has delved back into the impending Apocolypse, I am absolutely heartbroken that it had to come as the price of the deaths of Ellen and Jo Harvelle. The fact that Jo ended up dying because she tried to save Dean is not lost on me, either; as nonchalant as she tried to be around him (her rebuff at his attempt to sleep with her was fun to watch), her actions showed her true feelings. And Jensen Ackles very convincingly made me feel that his heartbreak over Jo’s impending death was just as deep as Sam’s had been for either Jessica or Madison. That first/last kiss…I bawled my eyes out. And that’s not even talking about Ellen’s heartbreak over having to watch her only child die. But she did what I expected her to do; she stuck by her child through the very end and used her last moments on Earth to help the boys get closer to defeating Lucifer. The impromptu funeral held in the silence of Bobby’s living room broke my heart, and now makes me feel that with the numbers dwindling down, the end seems very imminent not only for the boys, but for the series as well.

New Moon – OMFG Taylor Lautner!!! Okay, now that that’s out of the way…LOL…let me just say that overall, I loved the movie. Was it the best thing I’ve ever seen? No, but it was pretty good…better than Twilight. I’m going to take my kids to see it tomorrow, so I think I’ll wait until then to do a review. I always watch the first time with rose-colored glasses, so I want to see if my thoughts on it will change between now and then. But for now, it was awesome. :)

Kinda all over the place this week

I’ve been doing a lot of writing lately due to school, so I’ve been neglecting my blog and my LJ. So I guess I’ll just throw in a mix of stuff and hope that it makes sense.

V – Even though I proclaim myself a bit of a sci-fi geek, there’s still a lot of “must see” sci-fi that I need to familiarize myself with. V is one of them. I don’t recall ever seeing the 80′s version of the show, and therefore was not really excited about it coming to television. I actually decided to watch it simply because a lot of people were talking about it, and I had nothing else to watch on tv that night. I am glad that I did. The pilot was well done, with enough mystery and intrigue so that those of us watching for the first time ever knew where the storyline seems to be heading, but not to the point where we could figure out the whole premise of the show within the first hour. It looks as though it will be a great show to watch (and also, any excuse to look at Scott Wolf, Morena Baccarin and Morris Chestnut will do).

The Vampire Diaries – I must admit, even I didn’t see what Damon had planned to do until the end. And it was brilliant. Sad, yet brilliant. I loved how the writers chose to show a “typical” schoolgirl conflict – the whole “I don’t want to be with you but I’m gonna be snarky to the other female in your life” – and I also loved how they made Lexi the complete opposite: instead of toying with Elena’s jealousy or being a complete bitch, she took the mature road, which is very different from the way others in her situation would have reacted. It was wonderful to see Stefan in a situation where he could be completely himself; funny, playful and happy and my heart was breaking for him by the end of the episode. This scenario was definitely not in the books, and I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

And did I mention how much I love Ian Somerhalder’s deliciously evil portrayal of Damon? And side note: Bonnie and Elena’s girlfriend moment was absolutely awesome. Much needed lightheartedness.

Supernatural - Only a show like Supernatural could take a concept as cheesy as being stuck in tv land, tie it to the Apocalypse, and do it well. I love how they are taking the current storyline and completely tying it in with events that have happened since Season 1. But now that we know what the plans are for Sam and Dean, what does that mean for the two brothers? Most of the Supernatural fandom have long suspected that the brothers would have to fight each other in the end, and it definitely looks as though this will become a reality. Will we also see Papa Win this season? I wouldn’t be too surprised…

NOW the New Moon fangirling has begun!

I normally don’t buy or read fashion magazines, but once I saw that Robsten were on the cover, I had to check it out. As far as the “are they or aren’t they” question, here’s my personal opinion: anyone who has ever seen these two together -whether it’s onscreen or at events- cannot deny the unmistakable sexual tension and chemistry between the two of them. I don’t know if they are dating in real life or not and I don’t care (I’m lying, I’d really love it if they were together), but one thing is for certain, they are a beautiful pair together.
